High Risk

Abu Mena

Egypt • Archaeological Heritage • Threatened by groundwater and neglect

History and Importance

Abu Mena is an ancient Christian archaeological site located near Alexandria in Egypt. The site became an important pilgrimage center during the early centuries of Christianity and attracted visitors from across the region.

The area contains the remains of churches, streets, houses, monasteries, and public buildings that reflect the religious and cultural importance of the settlement during the Byzantine period.

Current Threats

Abu Mena faces serious damage from rising groundwater caused by nearby agricultural activity. Increased water levels weaken the soil beneath the historic structures.

Unstable ground conditions have led to cracks, collapsing foundations, and structural damage throughout parts of the archaeological site. Lack of maintenance and environmental pressure continue to threaten its preservation.

Preservation Efforts

Preservation efforts focus on lowering groundwater levels, strengthening fragile structures, and improving site monitoring.

Archaeologists and conservation teams continue documenting the site and protecting important remains while working to reduce additional environmental damage.
