Yemen • Cultural Heritage • Threatened by conflict and structural damage

History and Importance

The Old City of Sana’a is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and has been a major cultural center in Yemen for centuries.

The city is known for its tall tower houses decorated with white geometric patterns, ancient mosques, marketplaces, and unique traditional architecture. Sana’a’s historic design reflects centuries of Islamic culture and regional craftsmanship.

Current Threats

Armed conflict has caused major damage to many historic buildings, homes, and cultural landmarks throughout the city.

Airstrikes, lack of maintenance, collapsing structures, and economic difficulties have placed the Old City of Sana’a at serious risk. Some buildings have become unstable, while others face permanent loss.

Preservation Efforts

Preservation groups and local communities continue working to restore damaged structures and document important cultural sites.

Conservation efforts focus on protecting traditional architecture, rebuilding damaged homes carefully, and preserving Sana’a’s cultural identity for future generations.
